This is a presentation given at the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco last month by Mary Meeker, a partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB). It was recommended to me today and it blew me away. I thought you would find it very interesting to see how the global landscape of the internet is now taking shape and thought I would share it with you. Some of the take-aways from this are:
- 81% of the users of the top Internet Properties (Google, Yahoo, Facebook, ect) are from outside the US
- Smartphones and Tablets out-shipped PCs (Desktops & Notebooks) in Q4 2010.
- 55% of all Twitter traffic is from mobile phones (1% In 2008)
- Mobile search has increased 4Xs in the last 3 years
- People spend 8% of their media consumption in print while spending 27% of Advertising Budgets there.
If there's one thing that is made clear, it's that mobile is going to be huge in the not so distant future. Although this presentation looks at the global web, there's no doubt that these trends will be affecting local businesses as much as the fortune 500. I highly recommend taking 10 minutes to flip through this presentation.
